The Republic of Malawi (Malawi) is located in Africa, in the Southern Africa sub‑region. It is a landlocked country bordered by Zambia to the west, Tanzania to the north and northeast, and Mozambique to the east, south, and southwest. The capital city is Lilongwe, which serves as the seat of government and hosts the main national institutions. Malawi is a unitary State with a presidential system of government, in which executive authority is exercised by a president and legislative authority is vested in a national assembly. 

Malawi is party to the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, the 1967 Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees, and the 1954 Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons, but is not party to the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness. Malawi is also party to the 1969 OAU Convention governing the Specific Aspects of Refugee Problems in Africa and to the 2009 African Union Convention for the Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons in Africa (Kampala Convention).
