Asylum and Immigration (Treatment of Claimants, etc. ) Act 2004
Year: 2004
Type: Domestic law
Rights Category: Asylum
Description
The Act introduces new criminal offences and strengthened enforcement powers, redefined the support, accommodation and appeal rights of asylum and human-rights claimants, and granted immigration officers wider authority to arrest, detain, fingerprint and search. The Act also reformed marriage procedures for those under immigration control, created a unified Asylum and Immigration Tribunal, expanded removal and monitoring measures—including safe-country removals and electronic tagging—and established regulation of immigration advisers alongside revised fee structures. Its nine Parts and five Schedules amend and integrate existing legislation to deliver a tighter, more cohesive framework for managing immigration and asylum.
