The Republic of the Niger, commonly known as Niger, is a landlocked country in West Africa bordered by Algeria, Libya, Chad, Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso and Mali. Its capital, Niamey, is the main administrative center.
Niger occupies a strategic position at the heart of human mobility dynamics in West Africa and the Sahel. As a country of origin, transit, destination, asylum, and return, it lies at the crossroads of several regional and international migration corridors. These routes are used by people with diverse profiles, including refugees, asylum-seekers, migrants, victims of trafficking in persons, unaccompanied or separated children, stateless persons or persons at risk of statelessness, as well as other vulnerable individuals requiring specific protection and assistance.
...Niger is party to the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, the 1967 Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees, the 1954 Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons and the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness. Niger is also party to the 1969 OAU Convention governing the Specific Aspects of Refugee Problems in Africa and to the 2009 African Union Convention for the Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons in Africa (Kampala Convention).
