Country context

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a federation of seven emirates located at the eastern end of the Arabian Peninsula in West Asia, sharing land borders with Oman to the east and northeast and with Saudi Arabia to the southwest, as well as maritime frontiers in the Persian Gulf with Qatar and Iran and in the Gulf of Oman with Oman. The refugee population in the UAE recognized under UNHCR's mandate originate mainly from Iraq, Syria and a smaller number from Palestine. Refugees are accommodated in urban settings across the Emirates.

The UAE is not party to the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, nor to its 1967 Protocol. The UAE is not party to the 1954 Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons or the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness.
