Country context
The Republic of Peru (Peru) is located in South America, in the western part of the continent along the Pacific coast. It shares land borders with Ecuador and Colombia to the north, Brazil to the east, and Bolivia and Chile to the southeast and south. The capital city is Lima, which is the seat of government and hosts the main national institutions. Peru is a unitary State with a presidential system of government, in which executive authority is exercised by a president and legislative authority by a national congress.
Peru is party to the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and the 1967 Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees. It is also party to the 1954 Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons and the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness. Peru has incorporated the broader refugee definition of the 1984 Cartagena Declaration on Refugees into its domestic law in modified form.
