The Republic of Korea (South Korea) is located in Asia, in the Eastern Asia sub‑region. It occupies the southern part of the Korean Peninsula and borders the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the north, with coastlines along the Yellow Sea to the west, the East Sea to the east, and the Korea Strait to the south. The capital city is Seoul, which is the seat of government and hosts the main national institutions.
The Republic of Korea is a unitary State with a presidential system of government. Executive authority is exercised by a president, and legislative authority is vested in a national assembly.

The Republic of Korea is party to the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and the 1967 Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees. It is party to the 1954 Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons but not to the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness.
