The 2019 Amendment to the Law on Determining the Nationality of Children Born from a Marriage of Iranian Women and Foreign Men revises the single-article 2006 statute to broaden and clarify who may acquire Iranian citizenship by descent. Its purpose is to ensure that every child born of a Sharia marriage between an Iranian mother and a non-Iranian father—whether born before or after the law’s enactment—can be granted Iranian nationality.
