Description

The Equal Status Act 2000 (Act No. 8 of 2000) in Ireland prohibits discrimination in the provision of goods, services, accommodation, and education. It covers nine specific grounds for discrimination: gender, marital status, family status, age, disability, sexual orientation, race, religion, and membership of the Traveller community. Additionally, it protects individuals receiving housing assistance or social welfare from discrimination in the provision of accommodation.

The Act addresses both direct and indirect discrimination, as well as harassment, sexual harassment, and victimization. Importantly, it mandates reasonable accommodation for people with disabilities, provided it doesn't impose more than a nominal cost. The law also allows positive actions to promote equality for disadvantaged groups.

The Act has been updated several times, most recently as part of the Equal Status Acts 2000-2018
