The Argentine Republic (Argentina) is located in South America, in the Southern Cone sub‑region. It occupies a large part of the southern portion of the continent and shares land borders with Chile to the west, Bolivia and Paraguay to the north, Brazil to the northeast, and Uruguay to the east, and has a coastline along the South Atlantic Ocean. The capital city is Buenos Aires, which is the seat of government and hosts the main national institutions. Argentina is a federal State with a presidential system of government. Executive authority is exercised by a president, and legislative authority is vested in a national congress. 

Argentina is party to the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and the 1967 Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees. It is also party to the 1954 Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons and the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness. Argentina has incorporated the broader refugee definition of the 1984 Cartagena Declaration on Refugees into its domestic law.
