Country context
Armenia is a landlocked country located in the South Caucasus region, bordered by Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Iran. It has a long history of hosting refugees and asylum seekers from various regions, including the Middle East, neighboring countries, and more recently from areas affected by conflict such as the Karabakh region. The country has developed a legal framework that grants asylum seekers the right to reside in Armenia during the asylum process and to work while awaiting the outcome of their application.
Asylum seekers in Armenia can either stay in a reception center or, if the center is at full capacity, receive financial support for alternative accommodation. The country also provides asylum seekers access to healthcare and education on an equal footing with local citizens. Over the past few years, Armenia has seen an increase in asylum applicants, resulting in higher demand for housing and social services.
...Armenia has made progress in reducing the number of stateless persons within its borders, with initiatives aimed at improving the legal recognition and rights of stateless individuals, although a small group remains without citizenship. While Armenia has generously hosted refugees, the challenges of integrating refugees into local communities remain, with efforts focused on social cohesion programs, including vocational training, employment initiatives, and community engagement activities.
