Country context
The Federal Republic of Somalia (Somalia) is located in Africa, in the Horn of Africa sub‑region of Eastern Africa. It borders Ethiopia to the west, Djibouti to the northwest and Kenya to the southwest, with coastlines along the Gulf of Aden to the north and the Indian Ocean to the east. The capital city is Mogadishu, which is the seat of government. Somalia is a federal State with a federal parliamentary system of government, in which executive authority is held by a president and a government led by a prime minister, and legislative authority is exercised by a bicameral parliament.
Somalia is party to the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and the 1967 Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees. It is not party to the 1954 Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons, the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness or the 1969 OAU Convention governing the Specific Aspects of Refugee Problems in Africa. It is party to the 2009 African Union Convention for the Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons in Africa (Kampala Convention).
