The United Republic of Tanzania (Tanzania) is located in Africa, in the Eastern Africa sub‑region. It borders Uganda and Kenya to the north, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, Zambia and Malawi to the southwest, Mozambique to the south, and the Indian Ocean to the east. The capital city is Dodoma, which is the seat of government, while Dar es Salaam is the largest city and a major administrative centre. Tanzania is a unitary State with a presidential system of government. Executive authority is exercised by a president who serves as head of state and government, and legislative authority is vested in a national assembly. 

Tanzania is party to the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and the 1967 Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees. It is not party to the 1954 Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons or the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness. Tanzania is party to the 1969 OAU Convention governing the Specific Aspects of Refugee Problems in Africa. Tanzania is not party to the 2009 African Union Convention for the Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons in Africa (Kampala Convention).
